Charmi Peña is not one of those photographers that was born with a camera in my hand. She came from a family where the acceptable career choices were: doctor, lawyer, investment banker… you get the idea. While medicine appealed to her for a long time, she double majored in economics and IT at Rutgers University just because… Then, she met the love of her life and her whole world changed. He gifted her with a camera to keep her busy while she figured out what the career should be. – A gift ended up changing the trajectory of her life.

Colors are an essential part of the world. The infinite shades of blues in the sky and the ocean, the delicate greens of vegetation in the Spring, the gold and reds of foliage in the Fall...

But what happens when these colors are removed? Suddenly we step away from reality and enter an unfamiliar world where patterns, geometrical shapes and contrasts emerge stronger. 

During this lecture, Sony Artisan of Imagery Thibault Roland will discuss Black and White Photography. How to create and use leading lines, textures and light in order to build dynamic and original photographs. He will illustrate how important it is to visualize and build an image even before pressing the shutter button, and how your overall photography work (including color) can benefit from the rigorous process of creating in B&W.

Thibault is originally from France and currently based in Portland OR, USA. He was trained in physics and worked as a researcher at Cornell and Harvard University, where he studied fundamental biological mechanisms using optics and microscopy.

At college, he became instantly fascinated by the theory of relativity, which is a domain of physics that predicts that time and distance are relative and entirely dependent on the location and conditions of observations, just like with photography. Another aspect of physics that always stuck with Thibault is the Observer's Effect. This term relates to the fact that in science, the simple act of making a measurement (or capturing photons in order to create a photograph) can in itself modify the state of the object of interest (or what was captured by the camera).

After shooting with DLSR gear for over 20 years, Dan Bailey made the move to mirrorless and has transitioned to using Fujifilm X Series cameras exclusively in his work. Not only does mirrorless gear lighten your load in the outdoors, mirrorless cameras offer some distinct advantages over traditional DSLRs. In this presentation, Dan will show how you can use these advantages to expand your creative boundaries with photography and he’ll shed light on the specific gear and methods he uses in his own fast moving style of outdoor, adventure and travel photography. He’ll also present tips on light, lenses and composition so you can get the most from your camera, no matter what kind of gear you use.

Whether creating images in your backyard, traveling, or working in a studio, creating images that tell a story should be the goal for all photographers. Part of that journey comes from developing a style - so let’s explore how we can sort out developing your style - and discovering how light is your path towards better photography. Join Westcott “Top Pro” Ian Spanier for this lecture full of the tips and tricks to improve your approach to location and studio photography.

As they make their way from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, the Snake and Columbia Rivers traverse through ten distinct geologic landscapes. From majestic mountains to arid deserts, rushing torrents to calm waters, wilderness areas to heavily-impacted agricultural and industrial sites, each of these landscapes offers distinct photographic opportunities that tell stories of both their creation through deep time and their modern relation with humans. The goal of this presentation is straightforward - through a tour of some of the many different photographic stories and options told by the ten landscapes of these two rivers, to inspire photographers to recognize stories that can be told about their own local or regional watersheds.

Duncan Foley is a geologist, photographer, educator, and author. He taught environmental aspects of geology at Pacific Lutheran University for 30 years, and started with photography in a basement darkroom more than 50 years ago. Duncan has led or co-led photography workshops in the Puget Sound area, for the Yellowstone Association Institute, and in Yellowstone for Photo Adventure Workshops. He has judged photo contests for the Washington State Fair and Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest. Yellowstone National Park is among his favorite places to be.  He led field courses in the Park for 32 years, and has been one of the educators at park-sponsored training for tour guides and interpreters. Duncan’s book, Yellowstone’s Geysers and other Hydrothermal Systems, contains many of his photographs. He also has had photographs published on covers and in magazines and books.

If you want to learn how to produce images that are a cut above, it is imperative you take control of your imagery. Chas will cover in depth his Pro-Active in-field work methodology. Be it birds, wildlife, or any other photo discipline, this methodology is guaranteed to forever change the way you approach photography. The faster you are able to assess the conditions as presented and employ the tools and techniques necessary to render the image as desired, the more likely you are to accomplish your goal. To say that Tony Corbell has had an interesting career is an understatement. In his more the 38 years, he has photographed some of the most recognized faces including three US presidents, world leaders at the United Nations, fashion models, celebrities, three NASA astronauts and a lot more.  From his beginnings in a small west Texas town, he has photographed or taught photographic classes in more than 20 countries and world capitols and in all fifty US states.

Tony is as known for his educational efforts as his published photographic work. Tony Gale is an award winning portrait  photographer shooting for a range of advertising, editorial and corporate clients. Tony was raised in Bellingham, Washington (90 miles north of Seattle) and spent most of his time as a child exploring the woods behind his parents house. At 19 after visiting Bruce Lee's grave in Seattle, and taking his first photo with a disposable camera, he bought his first camera. He promptly broke it and bought his first SLR. At 21 he moved to Seattle to pursue photography and in fall of 2000 moved to NYC, the center of the world.

Tony has taught photographic lighting at FIT in NYC and Parsons the New School for Design, judged photo contests, and has traveled the country leading workshops for American Photographic Artists.
